Cyprus

Petra tou Romiou

It was part last hurrah and holiday for me, mostly a chance for some european sunshine before we left for NYC. Having received our passports from the US embassy a few business days after our appointment we snuck in a really last moment break. It came down to where we could find accomodation and flights cheaply and easily enough in August. Accomodation came rediculously cheap for 5 nights in self catered accomodation so we could justify getting shafted on flights somewhat.

We ended up in Cyprus, quietly petrified it was going to be an awful suspecting the entire island would be a mess of overdeveloped resorts and sunburnt brits. We found 5 nights accomodation at a restored apartment in a village near the Troodos mountains, about 30kms from the coast. Read more…

Gigaro, Côte d’Azur

P1020225

A week relaxing in the Cote D’Azur, should be a lovely relaxing time right? Landing in Nice to pick up the rental car posed a major stumbling block. They wouldn’t give me hire car we’d booked and paid for on account of it appearing I’d held a drivers license less than six months, you need to have held one for 12 months. I’d traded in my Aussie license for a UK one in January as it was about to expire. After a disheartened appeal, I even called the DVLA in the UK and asked if they could help prove i’d held a license for more than a year. After a lengthy conversation it was a no sir, we don’t hold any details of your previous license history just whatever you see on your drivers license.

Closer inspection of the back of my license i noted it was dated “< 18/01/08" and thought I'd try it on. Found another lady who was aware of my situation and heard my case as I tried to explain the little AUS code on the license meant that i'd held one previously and exchanged it for a British one. The person next to her was also having a debacle with an older Australian guy who'd just had his license renewed. They both went out back and came back for a few minutes and came out saying we were both fine. Joy. If we didn't get the car i don't know what we would have done. I would have cried (i was close to despair as it was) and if i'd had any energy left gone postal or considered flying back to London. Read more…

Berlin Über Alles

Berlin May 2008

We were lucky to get away to Berlin last weekend and catch up with Patrick. Things didn’t get off to a great start, we were stuck on a Ryan Air plane on the tarmac at Stansted for 5 hours because of computer systems failures at some control tower on the continet grounding all flights going east of London. Did they try rebooting? Bastards.

Got into Berlin about 2am, not the time to go on a mission to find the person to pick up the keys to our apartment. Kinda felt sorry for the girl but she ended up killing her time getting lashed at her local bar and we also got stung with a €35 late arrival charge. Found our apartment in Prenzlauer Berg and passed out. Read more…

Donostia-San Sebastián

P1010516

When the question arose as to where to go for my birthday this year i had no hesitation in responding ‘San Sebastian’. Damned if i knew why i thought the weather would be temperate and the beaches were great. Sam saw it a mile away though… Anthony Bourdain, foodie blogs, shows, travel articles and stuff I consume have left quite a subconscious mark. Gourmands paradise, highest number of michelin stars per capita in the world… we (mostly i) ate pretty damned well. Read more…

Vietnam

P1000379

It’s a week or so since we’ve gotten back and had some time to digest and reflect on our trip. Been over ten years since I last visited and everyone wonders why so long… so do I! Since the madness of Saigon everything here seems incredibly orderly and so very quiet.

No background of constantly beeping horns and the endless shuffle of people everywhere at all hours on the pavements and roads. Unhealthily we’ve developed a disregard for traffic but no black cabbies, cars or trucks will be swerving to avoid us.
