Napolean Dynamite

flippin sweet

I liked the look of this movie from the previews and secretly hoped I could convince someone to see it with me (this turned out to be much easier than i envisaged). Its one you’ll either love or hate. The opening credits are quite cool and its shallow, perpetuates sterotypes, littered with awkward silences and painful to watch but I still thought it was hilarious. Every character is a freak (probably why I really liked it) and the daggy clothes and music make the year a little ambiguous though it is the US mid-west and maybe Cyndi Lauper’s Time after Time is the hottest thing on the local radio? Napoleon looks, dresses (those boots!) and dang talk funny but the closing scene is pure dance magic poetry.

Some movie reviews

Feels like we only go to the cinemah in winter or something but some thoughts on what we seen recently…

  • The Incredibles is pretty sweet, go see it if you haven’t its as good as it has been made out to be. Great cheesy kitschy blam! kerpow! vibe, and fancy animation compliments a decent story (ahem you know what we’re talking about DreamWorks)
  • Garden State is a quirky romcom written and directed by Zach Braff (JD in Scrubs) and a decent debut. Its innocuous and had some funny moments even parts of the movie felt a little forced I enjoyed it.
  • House of Flying Daggers was a beautifully shot movie an amazing use of colours and landscapes, long panning and drawn out shots. The storyline was so weak and kung fu and romance don’t mix nor should chinese cinema do “love scenes”, they come off piss weak. Crouching Tiger set a precedent of beautifully shot movies with a tragic love story with a bit of fancy kung fu, Hero and this followed… is this what people really want? I didn’t think Hero was all that, I’m not asking for much, I just want kick ass wire flyin fantastico kung fu action and a thinly disguised plot! The movie got a little tedious toward the end and trying to keep up with who Zhang Ziyi’s character was in love with got a bit much. The bamboo flying scene in this goes up pretty high in my list of most ridiculously unbelievable but thoroughly enjoyable fight sequences up with the bamboo tower in one of the Once Upon a Time in China movies.

Everything you were afraid to ask about “Mulholland Drive”

This was on the box last night, only half paying attention but after numerous viewings I’ve yet to figure out what it all means. I remember stumbling across this longish article at Salon.com not too long ago if you’re interested in dissecting the movie…
