CMJ 08

it seems i have my head in the sand further than usual. The CMJ 08 music and film festival has a silly amount of shit happening this week. Pissed that we missed Madlib and Peanut Butter Wolf tonight and FREE as well…

Adult Decampment

DECAMPMENT from ADULT. on Vimeo

Adult came to our town screening their film Decampment presented with a live soundtrack.  Whilst waiting inline we had some local art students moaning about the 12 bucks it cost to get in and describe it as a “mid western horror”. I thought that was pretty hilarious, but i now see it’s how it was described on their website. It was filmed entirely in Detroit and i guess we’re desensitized so it didn’t freak us out.

It’s a silent movie and the asthete continues with the themes seen in Nicola Kuperas’ photography and band cover/label art. Lots of shoes, legs and faceless or below the neckline shots. Wasn’t quite sure what to make of the movie, the soundtrack was pretty good though. It’s being released as a limited 3×7” set with stills from the movie. Acting was pretty bad but i suppose thats much of the point, it seems like it would have been fun to make. It was very kitschy and we rather appreciated the live soundtrack.

Saki

Saki is just opposite Smithfield market, it was surprising how quiet it was on a saturday evening. I’m sure the area is heaving with suits and media execs during the week. There’s a little deli upstairs closed weekends though so i couldn’t have a nosy through the goodies on offer. There’s a fair sized dining room with some benches around a sculpture that looks like a stalagmite and a bar downstairs.

Some deliciously fruity saki based cocktails didn’t make the menu easier to deal with so we opted for the 6 course chefs menu with flowers (it was Chelsea flower show week). The little morsels were damn tasty, i’m such a glut and feel cheated by the small portions. The vego was well catered for with an equivalent vegetarian dish and the sushi was suitably creative. A “main” of miso baked black cod nods to the chefs time spent in Nobu kitchens but the little prawn balls were probably the highlight of the night. Sam’s aubergine risotto was a delicate dish of aubergine and some small grains we couldn’t make out. Deserts were a bit of a let down whilst green tea ice cream can never go wrong the cake it was served with just didn’t inspire.

It got rather noisy when a large group of americans descended on the venue. Food was pretty darn good, amience was lacking but the cocktails were absolute winners. Small selection of wines, saki and umeshu. Not a cheap meal but good quality and you might get better mileage chosing a la carte i was incapable of making any decisions this night (just for a change). It’s around the corner from Fabric not that it’d be a winning combination for a night out though!

Pan’s Labyrinth

Pan’s Labyrinth go see it! Dark fairy tale with a few gory scenes, so not for the kids. FX and digital parts were amazing helping weave between the surreal and real.

Zis-shoe

Its a shame the offical Store Zissou has sold out but I’m prepared to give up my so called career and join Team Zissou for intrepid ocean adventures, a pair of red speedos, beanie, Glock and a pair of Adidas Zissou’s.

Old news I know but you could always fashion your own or sign this or this petition to get Adidas to release them officially (via Josh Rubin’s Cool Hunting).

Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is worth seeing if you enjoyed the vibe of the Royal Tenanbaums (and the fly red adidas track suit Ben Stiller sports). The cut-out boat set is used cleverly and a top performance from Bill Murray and crew. Good to see Noah Taylor is still kicking about and looking scruffy as ever playing a casio tone loving freak providing the dodgy original scores for the Zissou docos. Seu Jorge playing the safety expert provides a great soundtrack with portuguese interpretations and covers of David Bowie songs.
