A mix over at darkenergyradio.com

X612 asked for a  mix a little while back for the newly weekly podcast at http://darkenergyradio.com/ from the embers of the radioshow of the same name in Sydney from back in the day (respect! we* struggle with a sporadic monthly schedule).

Took me a bit of time to pull my finger out long enough to click record. It’s a mish mash of house and techno available at http://darkenergyradio.com/2010/12/26/episode-10-dang/ or direct download. Hit me up if you want any track ids.

* So Wrong So Right is Bethany, Tal and I’s monthlyish podcast of disco, italo, balearica and any other shit i can sneak in.

Seis Años

Six years and three continents ago we left the fair shores of Sydney, so young so naive I did not expect to be away so long. The few trips back to Sydney were often bitter-sweet though we were wooed on our last trip back at Christmas. The notion of settling back in Australia isn’t totally foreign though it’s getting a little ahead of ourselves at the moment.

We’ve had an amazing adventure so far. Seen and done loads of crazy shit we’d probably not have a chance to were we based in Sydney. It can be a struggle initially getting settled improving once we assimilate. We have a unique vantage point to interact, developing a picture of a place different to the harried view often seen from tourist reference points. I make it sound like we’ve been living amongst lost tribes in the Amazon but London and New York so far are markedly different from our native land.

We blew through London last weekend, catching up with old and new friends. As mentioned in my last post, I miss London. Having spent over 5 years there it’s our closest reference point for home. Learning the lay of the land and how to deal with the natives makes things so much easier. Patience has never been one of my strong points so New York is still taking a little getting used to. I struggled at the start with London, had such a vehement dislike of the place… oh how things change.

If home is where your heart is though I think mine is somewhere in the Basque and Catalonian regions of Spain or the south of Italy… or is that just my stomach? Visnja once described in her inimmitable way that family & friends at home said she’d lost her compass. It’s such an apt description of our current state.

Update: just realised this was post #500…

A good dump

It started flurrying as we walked home from the theatre last night. Lo and behold the state of our garden this morning! Supposedly a foot of snow in some places, don’t think the drop in Brooklyn was too far from that.

This though caught on our street on my way home this evening. There were a few cars with DEBT drawn on them, social commentary perhaps? Didn’t quite understand the milf jibe though

On The Road Again

This has nothing to do with anything other than it’s been a while between posts and I caught a couple episodes of PBS series featuring Mario Batali doing a road trip around Spain eating up a storm.Got me very jealous and something like home sickness and rather sad that a weekend jaunt to Spain at the last minute isn’t an option any more. Batali hangs with his best friends Gwyneth Paltrow and golf buddy Michael Stipe makes an appearance or two as well. Gwyny ate, seafood even. I thought she was vegetarian or macro or something… probably saw it in some tabloid.

I suppose not eating “meat” qualifies as vegetarian in most peoples heads? Ahem no. I’ve had this rant many a time already but you eat fish &/or crustaceans maybe even chicken on occasion? YOU ARE NOT VEGETARIAN. REALLY. Pescotarian? Whatever, you’re an omnivore deal with it and the consequence of your actions and yes a creature died for your meal. Sorry I digress. I wasn’t too jealous about hanging with rockstars (well maybe a little), a private lunch with Feran Adria in Madrid? hell yes.

Meanwhile until such time that I regather, get over jetlag or stop hibernating enjoy this choice tune from Barrabas, bit of a Lowlife and personal favourite.

I’m still standing

It’s almost ironic that I got a new computer and then fell off the interweb. Except after 4 months in New York I’m not sure i still remember what irony is anymore. We’ve had a string of visitors over the last couple months. My pancreas is taking a beating from all the eating and drinking.

Was hoping we’d get a break but Thanksgiving came and went and now it’s early December and we’re back in Sydney so very soon. Hoping work calms down and i get a chance to wind down before boarding the flight back. I’m back for less than two weeks after you take out the airtime and it’ll be a mad dash to try and catch up with people over an already busy christmas period.

Not a great deal to report at the moment. I started work in the midst of a shit storm, the missus has gotten her work permit finally but with the markets in turmoil things won’t be as easy on that front as we’d hoped. We’re loving our neck of Brooklyn though. It’s a wonderfull little area that’s neighbourly with a good deal of shops, restaurants and bars that you can lead a very cushy existance within a 5 block radius.

That’s all. I have to cook a meal for visitors.
