Blogging to a self hosted wordpress blog? there’s an app for that…
Here’s a photo from my camera roll… it’s wallpaper from the toilet at our local, Building on Bond
Apologies for the crappy lack of clip. It’s a damn fine song in its faux ska grooviness.
It’s been 4 months since I made the mostly painless switch to Mac. I was looking for a quiet/silent small form factor computer (plus a monitor). I don’t game or tinker anymore so didn’t need a souped up video card. My options included building my own, having one custom built . In the end a souped up 20” iMac was the least painful and most cost effective option in my budget.
I’d been toying with OS X after getting it running on a hackintosh last year (a ball ache because I was running AMD chips) so it’s not been a total shock to the system. Old habits are hard to break so XP is installed via Bootcamp and occasionally run it through Parallels. There’s still a handful of applications and utilities I haven’t found replacements for yet though.
My inner geek likes BSD under the hood and running things from command line. It’s definitely a better interface and hasn’t taken much getting used to though relearning keyboard shortcuts is a pain. Resizing windows is an annoyance as is the mouse at times as is switching to a PC at work and getting the Command and Windows keys all confused. No major regrets, other than wishing I could have waited and picked up one of the newly marked down iMac’s and gotten a 24” one around the same money. Sigh…
This post brought to you from OS X. Messing about with this on and off recently and got it up and running without too much agro, plenty of random useful tidbits if you’re prepared to wade through the forums. Software updates can be a bit tricky as i’ve learnt rather harshly. Still to get printer and scanner working, not that i’ve tried too hard but so far so good. Some of the keystrokes (Home/End) are going to take some getting used to though…
One of the hard drives crashed about a month ago and we’ve just started dealing with the fallout. Most of the files we lost/corrupted are pictures we’ve taken abroad, most annoyingly nothing I couldn’t download again was lost. I spent most of the weekend trying recover/repair the files but quite a few of them have been lost to bad sectors.
We’ve just gotten around to printing our holiday snaps, some of which were uploaded to the gallery but many hadn’t. Even so I’d sized them down so much they’re not much use for printing…grrr. The hard drive was replaced though its delaying the inevitable and the pile of shit computer now really has to go, sigh.
