This is mostly the musing and rants of a mad man. My interests are broad and varied, which is to say my attention span is very short. I’m often thinking of food, eating or thinking about what to eat next. I love to eat like a local when abroad and can’t help stopping at street food vendors for a treat. I’m fond of cooking but like eating feel it’s an experience best shared with others. I am loathe to eat out on my own.
I like the warm sound of vinyl and every time I check the shelves are a little fuller, even though I don’t get to record stores as much as I’d like. I may have always been a compulsive collector though (cards as a kid). I can’t walk past a box or 20 of records at a flea market and not have a flick through. Otherwise I’ll be digging around 2nd hand record stores for disco, boogie, house, electro, detroit(ish) techno, and soul 12’s.
I like travelling to new places, preferably warm with good food and interesting architecture. I like taking photos but lately haven’t brought out the camera much and don’t really know why. Maybe it’s cos I only have a little point and click at the moment and have major SLR envy... actually I can’t use that as an excuse.
I grew up in Sydney and it is the best places in the world. I’ve been fortuitous that my job has given us the opportunity to live abroad. We spent almost 6 years in London (2003-8), living in the sarf-east (Surrey Quays) and Queens Park/Maida Vale in the NW. It was hard work at times and the weather is grim. We spent enough time for it almost start feeling like home. But if I’m honest I will mostly miss cheap and easy access to the Mediterranean and Europe other than the friends we made.
We’re now in We spent a wonderful 3 years (2008-11) in Brooklyn, NY in a sweet garden apartment in a Boerum Hill Brownstone. We had plenty of fun times getting the grill aka BBQ on and the yard jungle in the warmer months. We arrived in the US in the midst of an economic depression and a historic election year. It’s been interesting and tough getting settled at times. Maybe NY lost it’s edge since Giuliani became mayor but there is still plenty of cool shit and interesting people to suss out.
Hopping from one major financial crisis to another, at the end of July 2011 we upped to Singapore. It’s sweaty. constantly. And the aircon in the shopping malls of which there are far too many is always too cold. I’ve hooked up with old friends and am playing records and having fun times with the Mugic crew.
Thanks for stopping by.
